Silicon Valley Community Foundation is offering a webinar June 14, from 9-10 a.m. to learn how to support school districts in their implementation of SB 359. Thanks to the support of the League and others, SB 359 – the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on October 5, 2015 and took effect on January 1, 2016. (View SB 359 Fact Sheet)
Today, as many school districts adopt and implement a transparent and objective placement mathematics policy for their incoming 9th graders, we are providing them technical assistance to ensure that implementation fulfills the intent of the law.
SVCF has created a toolkit that includes:
- Sample Board Policies
- The Getting it Right Tool – A step by step guide to implementing the policy
- Research resources and other helpful materials
We hope that you and/or members of your staff will join us.
The webinar will be held on June 14 from 9-10 am. Please email George Dallas, Administrative Assistant to the Executive Office, if you would like to participate. View the advisory letter sent out to all county, school district and charter school administrators from the State Superintendent of Public Instructions, Tom Torlakson. In the letter, Mr. Torlakson outlines the requirements set forth by the mathematics placement policy for pupils entering grade nine. (PDF of letter)
