Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are very excited to announce that Senate Bill (SB) 359 – the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 – was signed into law today by Governor Brown!

Thanks to you and your support, this new law will help prevent math misplacement in school districts across the state, giving thousands of California’s youth a fair chance to succeed.

SB 359 also sets the stage for increased diversity in California’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce pipeline, which was a central goal of this legislation. All our students will now be better able to prepare for and participate in California’s workforce.

Now that SB 359 has been signed into law, SVCF is committed to ensuring that all school districts, parents and students are aware of this law and that districts have the necessary tools to successfully implement fair and transparent mathematics placement policies.

Again, thank you for your help and support in helping us realize our shared dream that every California child’s progress is determined by fair, transparent and objective requirements!

Best, Emmett
