In 2018, 35 percent of all grants made from Placer Community Foundation donor-advised funds were opportunities that the foundation staff brought directly to donor advisors. The foundation hosts a “BenefacTOUR” program for donors to visit and learn from local nonprofits. One group of donor advisors at Placer Community Foundation came together to purchase a mobile food pantry to fill a need in the local food system. Another group of donor advisors pooled their grant funds to give all of the region’s foster youth access to laptop computers. A study of the program by researchers at USC showed that the computers helped foster youth with schoolwork as well as social connections. They then leveraged the results of this pilot and received funding from new sources to scale the program across the state.
