CFMC Soberanes Fire Fund

Newson August 1st, 2016No Comments • Leave a comment

The Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC) has created the Soberanes Fire Fund to assist the affected community in recovery efforts from the #SoberanesFire which began July 22, 2016. Donations to this fund will provide support in the aftermath of the fire. Grants from the fund will be distributed to nonprofit agencies and organizations directly assisting individuals to meet needs as they arise. We are working in close partnership with the Coast Property Owners Association to deploy resources where they are most needed.

The CFMC has waived all administrative fees so 100% of donations will be used for grantmaking. The funds will be used to make grants to agencies providing emergency assistance, health and human services, short term housing/rental assistance, reimbursement of equipment and supplies, and other immediate relief or long-term recovery support for the affected residents. The fund is a trusted repository for philanthropic assets to be directed specifically for this purpose. (Click here to read more at www.cfmco.org)

Silicon Valley Community Foundation offering webinar June 14, 9-10AM

Newson May 25th, 2016No Comments • Leave a comment

Silicon Valley Community Foundation is offering a webinar June 14, from 9-10 a.m. to learn how to support school districts in their implementation of SB 359. Thanks to the support of the League and others, SB 359 – the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown on October 5, 2015 and took effect on January 1, 2016.  (View SB 359 Fact Sheet)

Today, as many school districts adopt and implement a transparent and objective placement mathematics policy for their incoming 9th graders, we are providing them technical assistance to ensure that implementation fulfills the intent of the law.

SVCF has created a toolkit that includes:

  • Sample Board Policies
  • The Getting it Right Tool – A step by step guide to implementing the policy
  • Research resources and other helpful materials

We hope that you and/or members of your staff will join us.

The webinar will be held on June 14 from 9-10 am. Please email George Dallas, Administrative Assistant to the Executive Office, if you would like to participate.  View the advisory letter sent out to all county, school district and charter school administrators from the State Superintendent of Public Instructions, Tom Torlakson.  In the letter, Mr. Torlakson outlines the requirements set forth by the mathematics placement policy for pupils entering grade nine.  (PDF of letter)

March 2016 National Standards update

  • The process is taking longer than anticipated, and Lara Kalwinski is now reviewing applications that were submitted last October.
  • Christina Gonzalez, a lawyer, will begin on April 4 to help Lara.
  • The clock on National Standards yearly accreditation does not begin until a community foundation’s first online accreditation is complete.
  • If a National Standards application is in process and the accreditation date passes, the community foundation is automatically put into extension.
  • If a community foundation cannot find their name on the cfstandards.org locator, they can contact submissions@cfstandards.org

The key point is that a community foundation that was certified for national standards is still on national standards while the recertification process is underway.

Please feel free to contact Lara directly if you have any questions on this issue.  Lara Kalwinski <Lara.Kalwinski@cof.org>
